early day motion n. British Politics (in the House of Commons) a formal parliamentary motion which is submitted for debate at the earliest opportunity but with no time fixed for it, and in practice is rarely actually debated; abbreviated EDM. The main purpose of an early day motion is to draw attention to a particular subject or area of interest.
