Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish almendrón.
Etymology: < Spanish almendrón (18th cent. or earlier) < almendro almond tree (see almond n.) + -ón -oon suffix.
Any of several tropical trees bearing nuts resembling almonds; esp. the Brazil nut tree, Bertholletia excelsa, of forests on the banks of the Amazon and Rio Negro, and the Indian almond, Terminalia catappa, native to South East Asia and cultivated in parts of tropical America.
