单词 earn-bleater
释义

earn-bleatern.

Brit. /əːnˈbliːtə/, U.S. /ˌərnˈblidər/, Scottish English /(j)ɛrnˈblitər/, /(j)ɛrnˈblɪtər/
Forms: 1700s earn-bliter, 1700s yern-bliter, 1700s yern-blitter, 1700s– earn-bleater, 1800s iron-bleater, 1800s– ern-bleater, 1900s girn-bleater (probably transmission error).
Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain.Perhaps ultimately an alteration of Old English hæferblǣte (also as hæfenblǣte), denoting a kind of bird, probably the snipe (see heather-bleat n.), with remodelling of the second element by association with bleater n., although the model for the form of the first element would then be unclear. Compare other names for the snipe with similar remodelling of the second element, as e.g. heather-bleater n., heron-bluter n. at heron n. Compounds 4; perhaps compare also bog-blitter n. at bog n.1 Compounds 4. Compare also with various remodellings of the first element English regional (northern) hammerbleat , weather-blate n. In form iron-bleater remodelled after iron n.1 (compare δ. forms at that entry).
Scottish (chiefly north-eastern). Now rare.
The snipe, Gallinago gallinago. Sc. National Dict. (at cited word) records this sense as still in use in Aberdeenshire in 1942.
