单词 almightin
释义

almightinadj.n.

Forms: late Old English–early Middle English almithtin, early Middle English ælmichtin, early Middle English ælmihtin, early Middle English almichin, early Middle English almichtin, early Middle English almicten, early Middle English almightin, early Middle English almigten, early Middle English almigtin, early Middle English almihtin, early Middle English almiten, early Middle English almithen, early Middle English almithin, early Middle English almiðin, Middle English allmightin, Middle English almihten, Middle English almyghten; N.E.D. (1884) also records for the second element the forms Middle English -mightten, Middle English -miȝtin.
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English ælmihtine , ælmihtigne , almighty adj.
Etymology: Apparently < Old English ælmihtine (variant of ælmihtigne, masculine accusative singular of ælmihtig : see almighty adj.), with the ending perhaps reanalysed as an adjectival suffix after -en suffix4, or perhaps remodelled after proper names in -ine suffix4. The development reflects the loss of adjectival inflection at the end of the Old English period, and the word is apparently used in indeclinable form even in the earliest examples. Compare almightend adj.It has alternatively been suggested that the ending is after drightin n., as the adjective always occurs as an attribute of God; however, although the word is occasionally attested in collocation with drightin n., it occurs more commonly in collocation with forms of god n. Compare God almighty n. Compare the Older Scots forms almichtine, almychtene (also almichting, almychting: see Dict. Older Sc. Tongue at Almichtine) which probably ultimately result from similar processes of reanalysis, but probably do not show direct continuity with the forms below.
Obsolete.
As an attribute of God: = almighty adj. 1a. Also as n.: the Almighty, God.
