释义

dudeenn.

Brit. /duːˈdiːn/, U.S. /duˈdin/, Irish English /ˈðuːdiːn/
Forms: 1800s doodheen, 1800s doohdeen, 1800s– dhudeen, 1800s– dhudheen, 1800s– doodeen, 1800s– dudeen, 1800s– dudheen, 1900s– dhoodeen; also Scottish 1900s– dudgeon, 1900s– dudyen; Irish English 1700s doodeen, 1700s–1800s dhuidheen, 1800s– dudyen (northern), 1900s– didgeen (northern), 1900s– dúidín, 1900s– dudgeon (northern), 1900s– dudyeen (northern).
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish dúidín.
Etymology: Apparently < Irish dúidín (although this is first attested later: first half of the 19th cent. or earlier) < dúid , dúd stump, stumpy object, kind of short-stemmed pipe (of uncertain origin) + -ín -een suffix2.The palatal nature of the internal -d- of the Irish etymon is reflected by the English forms dudyen and dudyeen; the forms didgeen and dudgeon reflect a development of this palatal stop into the affricate // in some (especially northern) varieties of Irish. In form dudgeon probably also partly by association with dudgeon n.1
