Etymology: < abash v. + -ance suffix. Compare Old French abaïssance the condition of being surprised or discomfited (c1300), Middle French esbahissance , esbaïssance , in the same sense (1343; also mid 12th cent. in Anglo-Norman in sense ‘frantic impression’). Compare also Middle French abessance abasement, humility (see abaisance n.). Compare abashing n. and abashment n.
