单词 duenna
释义

duennan.

Brit. /d(j)ʊˈɛnə/, U.S. /duˈɛnə/
Forms:

α. 1600s doüegna, 1600s douegna, 1600s dovegna, 1600s–1700s duegna.

β. 1600s– duena, 1600s– duenna.

γ. 1600s– dueña Brit. /ˈdwɛnjə/, U.S. /ˈdwɛnjə/.

Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish dueña.
Etymology: < Spanish dueña lady in waiting at the Spanish Court (13th cent. as †duenna ), woman employed as a governess or chaperone (17th cent.), specific sense developments of dueña married lady, mistress (11th cent. as †duenna ; compare the corresponding masculine dueño master: see duende n.), ultimately < classical Latin domina lady, mistress (see domina n.). Compare Italian (rare) †duenna lady, mistress (a1540; 17th cent. as †duegna), French duègne elderly woman acting as a governess or chaperone to a young woman (1655; first half of the 17th cent. as †doëgne, †dueña), both < Spanish. The α. forms apparently show adaptation of the Spanish form with ñ (/ɲ/) to English pronunciation and orthography; compare similar early modern variation at e.g. señor n.
