Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu dafʿadār; Persian dafʿadār.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu dafʿadār and its etymon (ii) Persian dafʿadār < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps compare Persian dafʿa time, instant, Arabic dafʿa push, thrust, impetus, impact < dafaʿa to push) + -dār-dar suffix.
Anglo-Indian. Now historical.
In the Indian Imperial Police and certain divisions of the Indian Army under British rule: a junior officer who is a native of India; (in regiments of the irregular cavalry) spec. a non-commissioned officer equivalent in rank to a corporal. Cf. havildar n.
