Etymology: < the name of Dr François Durif, French botanist, who first propagated the variety in the 1880s.
A variety of vine yielding black grapes used in winemaking, and originating in the French Rhône region; a grape of this variety.In California, Mexico, and South America wine from the Durif is commercially referred to as Petite Sirah (Petite Sirah n.).

1994 J. Robinson Oxf. Compan. Wine 350/1 Durif is..a selection of another variety, Peloursin. It was propagated eponymously by a Dr Durif in south eastern France in the 1880s. Today it has all but disappeared from France but has long thought to be the same as the variety known in North and South America as Petite Sirah.
2004 O. Clarke Austral. Wine Compan. 14 Petit Verdot and Durif are proving successful in the warmer irrigated regions.
