Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: empathy n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < empath- (in empathy n.) + -ic suffix; compare -pathic comb. form.The form empathic occurs in occasional (unrelated) earlier use with the sense ‘emphatic’, either as an error for emphatic adj. or as a derivative formation from Hellenistic Greek ἐμπάθεια physical affection, passion, or related words (see empathy n.). Compare also note at empathetic adj.
