Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French empennage.
Etymology: < French empennage feathering of an arrow (1832), tail assembly of an aircraft (1904 or earlier with reference to a balloon) < empenner to feather (an arrow) (c1100 in Old French; < em- em- prefix + penne long feather: see pen n.3) + -age -age suffix. Compare earlier pennage n.
