Origin: A borrowing from French, combined with an English element. Etymons: French empêtré , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < French empêtré (1792 or earlier in zoological use, attributed to E. L. Daubenton; use as adjective of past participle of empêtrer impester v.) + -ous suffix.The mammals in question (seals, walruses, dugongs, and manatees) were called Empêtrés in the classifications of Vicq d'Azyr (1792) and Lacépède (1799). N.E.D. (1891) gives the pronunciation as (e·mpĭtrəs) /ˈɛmpɪtrəs/.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
Belonging to a former subdivision of mammals with hind limbs in the form of flippers.

1884 New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon Empetrous, a term applied to animals like the seal, which have such short members or limbs that they lie directly upon the ground.
