Origin: A word inherited from Germanic; modelled on a Latin lexical item.
Etymology: Cognate with of formed similarly to Dutch aardgal (16th cent.), Old Saxon erthgalla (Middle Low German ērtgalle ), Old High German erdgalla (German †Erdgalle ) < the Germanic base of earth n.1 + the Germanic base of gall n.1, after classical Latin fel terrae (see feltrike n.), so called on account of its bitter taste.
Now historical.
Any of various bitter herbs of the family Gentianaceae; esp. common centaury, Centaurium erythraeum.
