Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: earth v., -ed suffix1; earth n.1, -ed suffix2.
Etymology: Partly < earth v. + -ed suffix1, and partly (in sense 2) < earth n.1 + -ed suffix2 (compare later earth n.1 13c). With sense 3a compare grounded adj.1 7.
1. Dwelling or buried underground; spec. (of a hunted animal) concealed in or driven into an earth (cf. earth v. 2). Now rare.
