单词 earthland
释义

earthlandn.

Brit. /ˈəːθlənd/, U.S. /ˈərθˌlænd/
Forms:

α. Old English eyrðlond (rare), early Middle English yrþlande, early Middle English yrðlande, Middle English wirðland (in copy of Old English charter).

β. Old English earþland.

γ. Old English ærðelond (Kentish), Old English eorðes landes (genitive), Old English eorðland (rare), late Old English erðland, Middle English gerðelande (in copy of Old English charter), 1800s– earthland.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: earth n.2, land n.1
Etymology: < earth n.2 + land n.1 Compare (in more specific sense) ploughland n.The Old English (Kentish) form ærðelond apparently shows an inverted spelling for expected initial e (the non-West Saxon i-mutation of ea ); see further A. Campbell Old Eng. Gram. (1959) §289. The Old English form eorðland shows the influence of earth n.1; in the unusual genitive form eorðes landes with inflection of both elements (the first element being declined as a strong masculine; compare note at earth n.1). Compare forms and discussion at earth n.2
