Etymology: < Italian amaro (first half of the 20th cent. or earlier denoting a liqueur of this type) < amaro bitter (13th cent.) < classical Latin amarus bitter (see amarous adj.).
Any of a group of bittersweet Italian liqueurs, flavoured with a variety of herbs and roots and typically served as a digestif.
