Etymology: Old English (West Saxon) ealdfæder , < eald, eld adj., old adj., + father n.; compare Old Saxon, Old Frisian aldfader , Old High German altfater , modern German altvater patriarch, ancestor. The occurrence in northern dialects of the forms with eld- (as if from West Saxon eald ) has not been accounted for. Compare eldmother n.Sense 2 does not occur in the other Germanic languages; the form elfadyr has given rise to a suggestion that it is a distinct word, < Old English ęl- other; but this is against the evidence of the older forms.
