Forms: Also Middle English elringe, 1600s elldring, 1700s eldriene.
Etymology: apparently = Old High German erlinc , ‘escaurus’, probably cognate and synonymous with modern German elritze minnow, which Kluge connects with eller (Old High German elira , erila ), alder n.1, as if ‘fish that lives under the shade of alders’.
Obsolete. rare.
A fish; perhaps properly the minnow ( Leuciscus phoxinus), though this does not suit quot. 1618.
