Etymology: < earth n.1 + worm n. Compare Middle Low German ērtworm, Middle High German ertwurm (German Erdwurm), both denoting the worm, and also used figuratively; compare also German Erdenwurm, only in figurative sense (mid 16th cent., now archaic and poetic).Compare also Old English eorð-maða earthworm (see earth-mad n.).
1. Any of various oligochaete worms which burrow in the soil; esp. one of the suborder Lumbricina or family Lumbricidae (as the common Lumbricus terrestris), typically having a soft, elongated cylindrical body marked with annular segments.Earthworms are important in aerating and draining the soil and in burying organic matter, and they are frequently used as bait by anglers.
