amautn.

Brit. /əˈmaʊt/, U.S. /əˈmaʊt/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, amauts, amautit, amautiit.
Forms:

δ. 1900s– amaat.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Danish. Partly a borrowing from Eastern Canadian Inuit. Partly a borrowing from Western Canadian Inuit. Partly a borrowing from Greenlandic Inuit. Etymons: German Amaut, Danish amaut; Eastern Canadian Inuit amaut, Western Canadian Inuit amaut; Greenlandic Inuit amaat.
Etymology: In early use (in α. forms) (i) partly < German Amaut (1765 in the passage translated in quot. 1766) and partly < Danish amaut (1866 in the passage translated by the author in quot. 1875), both < Greenlandic Inuit †amaut (now amaat ). In later use (in α. , β. and γ. forms) (ii) < Eastern Canadian Inuit amaut (with variants amauti, amautik) and the corresponding forms in Western Canadian Inuit, cognate with Greenlandic Inuit amaat . In δ. forms (iii) directly < Greenlandic Inuit amaat. The plural forms amautit and amautiit apparently reflect plurals in the Inuit languages. The form amautiq at β. forms shows alteration by analogy with Inuit words ending in -q.
