Etymology: < Persian ʿīd and its etymon Arabic ʿīd festival, feast < Syriac ʿī'ḏā or its etymon Aramaic ʿēḏā , ʿīḏā , both in sense ‘festival’ ( > post-biblical Hebrew ʿēḏā pagan festival) < an Aramaic verb meaning ‘to turn, to repeat’, the festival being so called on account of its regular recurrence. With this festival compare also (from the same source):1698 J. Fryer New Acct. E.-India & Persia 306 On the Day of the Vernal Equinox..the Moors introduce their New-Year Æde, or Noe Rose, with Banquetting and great Solemnity. Persian ʿīd is normally pronounced /eid/, which may be reflected in the English forms aede and eid.
