Etymology: < Easter n.1 + egg n. Compare Middle High German ōsterei (German Osterei ). Compare pasch egg n. (and foreign-language forms cited at that entry), pace egg n.In sense 2 with allusion to Easter egg hunt n. at Compounds. Use in media contexts may have been influenced or popularized by the film The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), whose cast had an Easter Egg hunt on set, some of the eggs being visible during the film in various locations.
1. Traditionally: an egg, usually blown or hard-boiled and with a brightly dyed or painted shell, used as an Easter decoration or given as an Easter gift (cf. pace egg n.); (also) an egg-shaped wooden, porcelain, or jewelled trinket similarly given at Easter (cf. Russian Easter egg n. at Russian n. and adj. Compounds 2b). Later also: a hollow or solid egg-shaped chocolate confection given at Easter (now the usual sense outside the United States).
