释义 | Amphictyonyn. Ancient Greek History. Any of several alliances of neighbouring ancient Greek tribes or states formed to protect common interests. Also in extended use: a league, an alliance; a clique.The most significant Amphictyony was the Delphic or Great Amphictyonic League (or Council), originally organized to support the greater temples of Apollo and Demeter, which became politically important after the 6th cent. b.c., particularly during the Macedonian conquest of Greece.
