Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: effect n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < effect n. + -ism suffix.The term was popularized by W. D. Howells, whose use in quot. 1889 in fact translates use in Spanish by P. Valdés, who introduces the term in the context of a discussion of earlier criticism of his work by Howells.1889 A. Palacio Valdés Hermana San Sulpicio I.
