[ < French eau de Luce (1750 or earlier) < eau eau n. + de de prep. + Luce, the name of an apothecary in Lille, though according to 18th-cent. sources this preparation was in fact invented by Du Balen, a Paris apothecary, and the name of a different preparation became transferred to it as a result of confusion; compare scientific Latin aqua Luciae (1773 or earlier).]
