Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin amphitheātricus ; amphitheatre n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: Partly (in quot. 1601) < classical Latin amphitheātricus (also amphitheātrīticus) (of papyrus) made near the amphitheatre (Pliny) < amphitheātrum amphitheatre n. + -icus -ic suffix, and partly (in later use) < amphitheatre n. + -ic suffix. Compare slightly earlier amphitheatrical adj. and also theatric adj. With sense 2 compare earlier amphitheatral adj.Compare Middle French, French amphitheatrique (of papyrus) made near the amphitheatre (1562 in the passage translated in quot. 1601), (more generally) of or relating to an amphitheatre (1636).
