Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French effemination; Latin effēminātiōn-, effēminātiō.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French effemination (French effémination ) mollification, softening (late 14th cent. as effeminacion with reference to flesh), action or process of becoming like a woman (1503; 1556 in the passage translated in quot. ?1562), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin effēminātiōn-, effēminātiō softening, weakening, enervation (2nd cent. a.d.) < effēmināt- , past participial stem of effēmināre effeminate v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare slightly earlier effeminating n.
Now somewhat rare.
