Etymology: < South African Dutch eland, transferred use of Dutch eland elk < German Elend (1516 in form Ellendt ; later Elen ; also Elentier , earlier Elendthier ) < Lithuanian elnis elk, stag, cognate with Russian olen′ olen n. Compare ellan n., ellend n.
The largest member ( Taurotragus oryx) of the Antelope tribe, belonging to South Africa, East Africa ( T. derbianus, giant eland) West Africa and the Sudan, standing five feet high at the shoulders, of a heavy build, for the most part very fat, and much prized for its flesh. Also attributive.
