Etymology: < alms n. + house n.1Also attested in field names, as Knollesalmeshous , Pontefract, West Riding, Yorkshire (1406), the Almes howse in Kirgat , Leeds, West Riding, Yorkshire (1583). On the β. forms see note at alms n. With sense 2 compare Old High German alamuosanhūs in similar use.
1. Originally: a house for the accommodation or support of the poor or needy; esp. a house (often one of a group) established for this purpose in a particular parish or municipality. In later use more usually: a building formerly used for this purpose.Such houses are usually maintained by an endowment left by a private individual or raised by public subscription, or (formerly esp. in the United States) out of local public funds.
