Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Alnaschar.
Etymology: < Alnaschar (French Alnaschar, 1705 in Galland's translation of the Arabian Nights), the name of a beggar in the Arabian Nights who destroys his means of livelihood because he indulges in visions of riches and grandeur < Arabic al-naššār (also in a large number of variants, several of which have no medial -n-), probably < al the + naššār sawyer < našara to saw (something) apart, although the semantic motivation of the name is unclear.Alnaschar is the hero of the Barber's Story of his Fifth Brother. Compare the following earlier instance of the character's name in an English context:1712 J. Addison Spectator No. 535. ¶9. Alnaschar was entirely swallowed up in this chimerical Vision.
