Etymology: Middle English egalite , < French égalité: see egall adj. and -ity suffix.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: eˈgality.
Obsolete.
= equality n. (in 14th cent. with sense ‘equanimity’). Re-formed as a nonce-word by Tennyson, to convey the modern associations connected with the French word.
