Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Alogi.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alogi, name of a sect (5th cent. in Augustine) < Byzantine Greek ἀλόγοι , use as noun of masculine plural of ancient Greek ἄλογος unreasoning, irrational, absurd < ἀ- a- prefix6 + λογος Logos n. Compare German Aloger , plural (1836 in the passage translated in quot. 1846). Compare also Alogian n.The term was employed punningly by opponents of the sect to suggest an absence of both ‘reason’ and ‘the Word’ (see Logos n.) amongst its members.
Church History.
With plural agreement. The name given to a Christian group of the 2nd cent. a.d., regarded as heretical and alleged to have rejected the writings of St John and especially his doctrine of the Logos (see Logos n.).
