Origin: A borrowing from Hawaiian. Etymon: Hawaiian aloha.
Etymology: < Hawaiian aloha love, compassion, affection, also used as a greeting, cognate with Maori aroha aroha n.The variant forms in English reflect variations in the pronunciation of a single phoneme in Hawaiian. Compare the following earlier example of the Hawaiian word in an English context:1798 G. Vancouver Voy. N. Pacific Ocean II. iii. v. 139 The man instantly replied ‘arrowhah,’ meaning that he pitied him. Compare also the following slightly earlier use in English as a verb with the sense ‘to venerate’:1818 J.
