Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: eco- comb. form, -poiesis comb. form.
Etymology: < eco- comb. form + -poiesis comb. form (R. H. Haynes: see quot. 1990).Haynes earlier used the term ecopoiesy (compare -sy suffix1):1985 L. Margulis & D. Sagan in T. P. Snyder Biosphere Catal. 3/1 Ecopoiesy: Canadian Professor Robert Haynes.., a molecular geneticist, coined this phrase (1985) to mean the making of a planet habitable for life.

1990 R. H. Haynes in D. MacNiven Moral Expertise 180 Ecopoiesis is my neologism. The term refers to the fabrication of a sustainable ecosystem on a currently lifeless, sterile planet, thereby establishing a new arena in which biological evolution ultimately might proceed independent of further human husbandry.
