Etymology: Old English ǽlęnge , < e- prefix1 + *lęnge < Old Germanic *langjo- < *lango- long adj.1 The two etymological senses of ‘very long, tedious’ and ‘remote, lonely’, seem to blend in the later uses. Chaucer abnormally accents eˈlenge (rhyming with chaˈlenge.)Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈelenge.
