Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. empirico-regular Brit. /ɪmˌpɪrᵻkə(ʊ)ˈrɛɡjᵿlə/, /ɛmˌpɪrᵻkə(ʊ)ˈrɛɡjᵿlə/, U.S. /ᵻmˌpɪrəkoʊˈrɛɡ(jə)lər/, /ɛmˌpɪrəkoʊˈrɛɡ(jə)lər/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: empiric adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < empiric adj. + -o- connective. Compare empirio- comb. form.Formations are found from the first half of the 18th cent., earliest in the apparently isolated formation empiricomany (see quot. 1735 at empiricism n. 1), and more frequently from the early 19th cent.
