Etymology: Irregularly < ambassador n. (see -trix suffix), probably originally after French ambassadrice ambassadrice n. Compare earlier ambassadress n., ambassatrice n., ambassatrix n., and later ambassadrice n.With the β. forms compare e.g. embassador n., embassy n., and also embassatrix n.
Now rare.
The wife of an ambassador; = ambassadress n. 2. Later also: a female ambassador; = ambassadress n. 1. Cf. ambassatrix n.
