Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ēlīmāt-, ēlīmāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin ēlīmāt-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of ēlīmāre to make by filing, to produce with care and finish, to polish with a file, to remove by filing, file off < ē- e- prefix2 + līma file (see limate v.).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
transitive. To remove by filing; to polish.
