Etymology: < (i) French alpargate (1612 in the passage translated in quot. 1613), and its etymon (ii) Spanish alpargata (a1493; also alpargate (1495), (rare) †alpergata (1638 or earlier; compare quot. 1650)) < Spanish Arabic al-parġāt < Arabic al- the + Spanish Arabic parġāt, plural of parġa (recorded in Pedro de Alcala's Arabic–Spanish glossary, 1505) < (with elision of the initial vowel) Spanish abarca (10th cent. as †avarca), denoting a kind of sandal, of uncertain origin, probably a loanword. Compare Portuguese alpergata, denoting a kind of sandal (a1557 as †alpargate, a1595 as †alpergate), and also Spanish †alparga (1563).Compare the following earlier instances, in an Indian geographical setting, of a borrowing < Portuguese †alparca kind of sandal (a1508 as †halparca; < Spanish Arabic al-parġa):1598 W.
