A binary star of the first magnitude which is the brightest star in the constellation Centaurus of the southern hemisphere and the third-brightest star in the sky; also called Rigel Kentaurus or Rigel Kent. In later use also (more fully Alpha Centauri system): the three-star system comprising this binary star and the dwarf star Proxima Centauri.The Alpha Centauri system is the closest known star system to the Sun.
