Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: amber n.2, tree n.
Etymology: < amber n.2 + tree n.In sense 1 with reference to the fragrant odour of the plant's leaves. In sense 3 shortened < liquidambar tree (see liquidambar n. 2).
1. Any of several evergreen shrubs belonging to the mainly African genus Anthospermum (family Rubiaceae), having leaves that are fragrant when bruised; esp. A. aethiopicum of South Africa. Obsolete.
