Etymology: < Greek ἐϕεκτικός, < ἐπέχειν to check, hold back, hence to suspend (one's judgement), < ἐπί upon + ἔχειν to hold.
Characterized by suspense of judgement. In ancient use, a distinctive epithet of the Sceptic school of philosophers.
