Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ambi-.
Etymology: < classical Latin ambi-, combining form of ambō both; compare -i- connective.Classical Latin ambō is cognate with ancient Greek ἀμϕώ both (see amphoteric adj.) < a first element from the same Indo-European base as umbe prep. + a second element from the same Indo-European base as bo adj. Compare also classical Latin amb- (before a vowel), am- , an- round, about < the same Indo-European base as umbe prep. Attested earliest in the late 14th cent. in the Latin loan ambidexter n. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 17th cent. (an early example being ambilogy n.), but are rare before the 19th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek or Latin origin.
Forming nouns and adjectives, chiefly scientific, with the sense ‘both’ or ‘on both sides’.
ambiciliate adj. Zoology Obsolete rare (of a flatfish) having rough scales or spines on both sides of the body.
