单词 enantiomer
释义

enantiomern.

Brit. /ᵻˈnantɪə(ʊ)mə/, /ɛˈnantɪə(ʊ)mə/, U.S. /əˈnæntioʊmər/, /ɛˈnæntioʊmər/
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with another borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek έναντιος, Greek μέρος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek έναντιος opposite (see enantiosis n.) + μέρος part, share (see mero- comb. form1).
Chemistry.
Each of a pair of molecules that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. The typical cause of enantiomerism is the presence in a molecule of a carbon atom with four different substituents. These substituents can be arranged in configurations which are mirror images but cannot be superimposed (cf. chiral adj.). A pair of enantiomers may be distinguished by the fact that they rotate the plane of polarized light in opposite directions (cf. optical isomer n. at optical adj. and n. Compounds). They have otherwise identical physical properties but behave differently when interacting with other chiral molecules.
