Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: ambidexter adj., -ity suffix; Latin ambidexter , -ity suffix.
Etymology: < ambidexter adj. and its etymon post-classical Latin ambidexter + -ity suffix, after dexterity n.Compare post-classical Latin ambidexteritas ability to use left and right hands equally well, impartiality (1563 or earlier). Specific forms. On the β. forms see note at ambidexter adj. Specific senses. With the use in quot. 1593 at sense 1 compare omnidexterity n. at omni- comb. form . With sense 3 compare earlier ambidextry n.
1. Skill or talent, esp. in two or more fields. Also: ability to alter oneself, one's opinions, etc., to serve different purposes; adaptability.In later use chiefly understood as a metaphorical extension of sense 2.
