Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin embryoctonia , -y suffix3.
Etymology: < scientific Latin embryoctonia ( W. G. Ploucquet Commentarius medicus in processus criminales, super homicidio, infanticidio et embryoctonia (1787)) < Byzantine Greek ἐμβρυοκτόνος that kills the fetus (4th cent.; < Hellenistic Greek ἐμβρυο- embryo- comb. form + ancient Greek -κτόνος slaying: see myoctonic adj.) + classical Latin -ia -y suffix3. In β. forms with substitution of -y suffix3 for the ending. Compare French embryoctonie (1787 or earlier), German Embryoktonie (1826 or earlier).
Now rare.
The deliberate killing of an embryo or fetus in the womb; feticide; abortion. Also: = embryotomy n. 2.
