Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: embryo n., -oma comb. form.
Etymology: < embryo n. + -oma comb. form, after French embryome (L. Ranvier 1867 (as embryôme), in Bull. et mém. de la Soc. Anat. de Paris 42 302).
Pathology.
Any neoplasm derived (or thought to be derived) from embryonic cells or tissues.Originally often synonymous with teratoma n.; later usually reserved for a type of tumour, typically occurring early in life and often malignant, composed of cells resembling the embryonic cells of the organ in which the tumour arises, such as Wilms' tumour (nephroblastoma), retinoblastoma, etc.
