释义

Americanan.

Brit. /əˌmɛrᵻˈkɑːnə/, U.S. /əˌmɛrəˈkɑnə/, /əˌmɛrəˈkænə/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: proper name America, English -ana.
Etymology: < the name of America (see America n.) + -ana (see -ana suffix), after post-classical Latin Americana.Earlier use of post-classical Latin Americanus (adjective) is recorded from the 17th cent., particularly in book titles, such as J. Allin's Animadversions upon the Anti-Synodalia Americana (1664). This use was further popularized in the titles of early 19th-cent. reference works on American culture and history: e.g. Archæologia Americana (1820), Encyclopædia Americana (1829–33), Fauna Americana (1825), etc. In sense 1a, frequently in Bibliotheca Americana, which appears in the titles of several 18th- and 19th-cent. publications. Compare W. Kennett Bibliothecæ Americanæ Primordia (1713) and the anonymous Bibliotheca Americana (1789).
