Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin energeticus; Greek ἐνεργητικός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin energeticus (1539 or earlier) or its etymon (ii) ancient Greek ἐνεργητικός able to act upon, acting upon, active < ἐνεργεῖν to operate, effect (see energumen n.) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives from verbs (compare -ic suffix). Compare earlier energetical adj. Compare also earlier energical adj. The semantic development is closely connected with that of energy n.With use in scientific contexts (see senses A. 6, A. 7) compare earlier energetics n.
