Brit. /ˈɛn(d)ʒ(ᵻ)nəs/, U.S. /ˈɛndʒənəs/
Forms:

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: engine n., -ous suffix.
Etymology: < engine n. + -ous suffix, originally (in sense 1) after Anglo-Norman enginus, enginous, engignus and Middle French engigneus, engigneux clever, inventive, cunning, skilful (12th cent. in Old French; also in Old French as engignos (c1160)), (of a thing) requiring great skill (13th cent.) < classical Latin ingeniōsus ingenious adj. Compare Old Occitan engenhos, enginhos, Spanish †engeñoso (c1280), Portuguese engenhoso (13th cent.), Italian ingegnoso (13th cent.).The β. forms could alternatively be interpreted as showing an antedating of later ingenious adj.
